Mental Health Summit: When Black Cracks - A Journey to Healing Black Women and Youth
Mental health is a serious matter! Research suggests that the adult Black community is 20% more likely to experience serious mental health problems, such as Major Depressive Disorder or Generalized Anxiety Disorder. African American women, in particular, face several factors such as generational trauma, caregiver strain, sociopolitical experiences, etc. that can affect their mental health and many push their way through depression and anxiety on their own. In addition, according to the Center for Disease Control, in 2020 suicide was the third leading cause of death, respectively, for blacks or African Americans, ages 15 to 24. Despite progress in recent years, there is still a significant stigma in the black community associated with mental health and seeking therapy.
